Sari Style – Frieha Altaf in Satya Paul

At a recently held dinner party of ‘Aman ki Asha’, hosted by The Jang Group Pakistan & The Times of India , Frieha Altaf was spotted donning a black & white screen printed sari by Satya Paul. The sari was showcased by the designer at Lakme Fashion Week 2011 as part of his line ‘The Classics’ and wait for it – it even has a name – ‘The Happiness’ :)
Wish we had a clearer picturer, but from what we see (and considering the matching orange tote), we think it was an orange blouse for Frieha . Loved the dash of color against the black & white & she wore it well by keeping the accessories minimal. Cross border Fashion for the win !

Karan Johar’s Birthday Party (Part 4) – AWA’s Worst Dressed List

Apologies for sounding like Simon Cowell , but we could’nt  help compiling a list of celebrities who stepped out looking plain Bad. We wont get into much details and let the pictures do most of the talking.

1. Priyanka Chopra in Dolce & Gabbana

Of all the people who made it to this list, Priyanka was least expected. Cant even believe its a D&G. The only thing that worked were the hair.

2. Genelia D’Souza in Jatin Varma

Despite the fact that neck up Genelia looks cute (thanks to the new hair)  , the dress was too much of a hotch-potch for us to approve. The black strappy heels were also a poor choice of footwear .

3. Rani Mukherjee

Rani looks gorgeous when she sticks to her signature style saris/dresses. But the white satin dress was just not the right pick for the event, especially because of the ill fitting . For some odd reason it gives maternity-dress vibes.

 4. Parineeti Chopra in Shantanu & Nikhil

We have seen the upcoming star in some really impressive appearances as of late. However, this one was a disappointment . We werent fans of the dress itself and the red lips made for an odd combination.

5. Raveena Tandon

What went wrong about Raveena’s dress was that it was too 1990′s. Think Raveena needs to re-vamp her wardrobe.

6. Shamita Shetty

Shamita’s cowl neck fuchia dress was too cliche’d to leave a mark . The chunnky black shoes and clutch also brought the whole look down.

7. Urmilla Matondkar in Manish Malhotra

Though neck up Urmilla looked nice, but the fit of the dress just was’nt in place.

8. Ekta Kapoor

Oh Ekta ! it wasnt a fancy dress show. Too much skin, thick casual shoes and an orange arm band wrapped around the wrist – what else could possibly go wrong.

Karan Johar’s Birthday Party (Part 3) – Could Have,Should Have,Would Have,But Didnt List

The title says it all, and so we noticed there was a separate chunk of celebrities attending KJo’s birthday bash, from whom we had great expectations considering their past ‘performances’ – but disappointed to see their rather ‘blah’ appearances this time. Read on to see what brought these gorgeous ladies down .

1. Asin in Badgley Mischka

Asin Thottumkal has the capacity to kill. Literally. However this time the white Badgley Mischka Spring 2011 dress fell flat on her. The ‘curl’ and the neck piece only added to Asin’s woes. Is that a mobile she s holding in her hand ?#justsaying

2. Kajol in Khushali Kumar

One after another, Kajol was blowing us away with the new ‘her’. With this appearance however, our hopes came crashing down. The dress would have still been bearable with a full length lining. The accessories too looked mismatched.

3. Nargis Fakhri

Yawwwwn ! Oh that jaw-dropping-gorgeous face with a clich’ed black chiffon dress and a neck piece that fell out of place. We have said it before and we ll say it again – Nargis needs to to hire a stylist – ASAP.

4. Natasha Poonawala

Natasha , who is otherwise known to be a critically acclaimed fashionista, went a little too far by picking a cobalt blue dress that was too prom-y for the night.  The fit was off & the flare was a tad bit overwhelming for a birthday party.

5. Sonakshi Sinha in Shantanu & Nikhil

Sonakshi made a perfect case of ‘should have, could have, would have – but didnt’. Not because we didnt like the dress- but it wasnt meant for her (her broad/tall frame screams to bare the shoulders/neckline). Sonakshi has been giving stunning appearances as of late ,but this one felt lacking in comparison.

5. Sophie Chaudhri in Roberto Cavalli

Another fashionista, another look gone wrong. Sophie’s face transforms with her hair open and think she should have left them that way. The heels too were a major downer.

Karan Johar’s Birthday Party (Part 2) – AWA’s Almost There List

In continuation of our last post, we compiled a list of celebrities from KJo’s party who we thought were ‘almost there’ and would have looked great had they made slight changes in their appearances. Do we like them? Yes. Are we Blown Away? No. Here’s why :-

1. Kareena Kapoor in All Saints

We loved the tribal dress on Kareena. What Didnt Work – The dress should have been one size plus considering the bust is squashed and the fat is kinda oozing out . We were’nt fans of the strappy gold heels either. The Dress screamed for peep-toes instead.

2.  Anushka Sharma in Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna

One of the very few celebrities to go bold and different at the party was Anushka. Loved the Tailored suit on her chiselled frame. What Didnt Work – The hair were such killjoy. A sleek ponytail would have been just perfect for the look. The heels too were such bummer. Pumps/Brogues would have done the job.

3. Amrita Arora

The Hair – The Hair. Mommy-To-Be would have looked alot better had she skipped the handband/poofy crown look. Not feeling it.

 4. Dia Mirza in Rocky S

Well we wont really blame Dia here, because we arent fans of the cut-work around the bust at first place. What could have taken the focus off were open hair – lets say Afro – would have looked great on Dia.

4. Gauri Khan

The Hair – The Hair – Ah so Prom-y. Gauri Y U NO do better hair-dos?

 5. Kalki Koechlin in Christian Dior

The orange Dior was just the perfect pick for the event. What didnt work , again , were the Hair !
DIY : Just put a finger on the screen hiding the side bun/curls. Doesnt it transform the whole look?

6. Soha Ali Khan

Soha was one person who was THIS close to entering our Best Dressed List. The hair looked jaw-dropping sexy. However, what didnt work was the terribly misfit clutch bag. Had she skipped it altogether, it would have still been a 10/10 for us.

7. Neha Dhupia in Gauri & Nainika

One to always make striking appearances, Neha missed this one because of the necklace and the hair-do. The make-up too made her look washed out. If you want to know what we are talking about, compare it with the look from the runway. Agreed?

8. Preity Zinta in Gauri & Nainika

Just when we thought the red velevet gown looked great on Preity, the locks made us drop the idea. The ‘cutsie effect’ just doesnt go well with the classy feminine gown.

9. Sonali Bindre in Ramona Narang

What went Wrong – The fact that it was too safe  :) We like but we arent impressed much.

Karan Johar’s Birthday Party – AWA’s Best Dressed List

Of all the celebrities who attended Karan Johar’s 40th Birthday Party on 25th May in Mumbai , surprisingly , there were only a handful who made it to our best dressed list & fewer still who blew us away ; many A-Listers trickled down to the worst-dressed category and some failed to make an impression despite putting in an effort.
This time AWA decided to do something different for you guys and so we clubbed the appearances into different categories (this post being the first). Read on and take note of who wore what.

Disclaimer : The results might be shocking. Read at your own risk :P

1. Kangna Ranaut in Burberry

So when we said ‘fewer still who blew us away‘ Kangna was one of them. Intelligent choice of color . Loved the sassy hair against the victorian look. Make-up & accessories spot on ! For the finishing touches , just the right attitude *pout*

2. Deepika Padukone in Prabal Gurung

We re so in love with the gold Parabal Gurung gown , that despite not having a full length picture of Deepika , we are ready to crown her as the best dressed at the party (we re trying to put together Deepika with the complete picture of Jennifer Lawrence who wore the same dress earlier this year) . From what we see, waist up , Deepika has blown us away !

3. Malaika Arora Khan in Roberto Cavalli

Though Malaika wore this Cavalli jersey gown for the second time (first time in Dec’2011 at the High Life Dubai interview – see below ) , we think she looked as lovely as she did back then. Change of hair & accesories and she was ready to rock the red carpet.

4. Karishma Kapoor in Herve Leger

With Lolo in perfect shape, donning a black patent Leger, our long lost love for the label has come to life again (thanks to the gazillion Leger appearances by Bollywood actresses). A Bottega Veneta clutch & Black Louboutin pumps were perfect to add to the drama. *love*

5. Suzanne Roshan in Dolce & Gabbana

F.i.n.a.l.l.y Suzanne decides to change her hair – and BOY did it work wonders for her – perfectly complementing the Leopard Print D&G gown. Suzanne looked like ‘The’ celebrity wife and we aint complaining about anything in this look.

6. Bipasha Basu in Arpan Vohra

Though this black tiered Arpan Vohra gown was simple & drama-free , it looked gorgeous on Bips (especially the sexy back ;) ) . Side swept hair, and a sparkly Gucci clutch completed her look. Of all the ladies who chose to wear black for the evening , this was our favorite.

Fashion Face-Off – Ali Zafar & Ayesha vs. Imran Khan & Avantika

Call us biased, but we decided to do the rounds of Karan Johar’s 40th Birthday Bash starting from our very own ambassadors at the party – Ali Zafar & wife Ayesha Fazli . It was surprising how strikingly resembling their outfits were to those of Imran Khan & Avantika. That said , with no bias whatsoever, we think Ali fared the Tux much better than Imran ( thanks to the bow and a much sexier blazer ) and Ayesha won this one over Avantika – smarter accessory choices and better silhouette.

Ali Zafar is wearing ‘Republic by Omer’.
Ayesha s wearing Zara ShahJahan
Avantika wears Stella McCartney and a Rachana Reddy clutch
Imran – umm , just another Tux perhaps :/

Yummy Mummy or Not? Aishwarya Rai at the Cannes

Three very distinct and unexpected appearances by Aishwarya Rai at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival . We knew there would be extreme opinions and so they came pouring in – some hated ‘em – some loved ‘em – some out of pure Ash-thrashing fun and some criticising for the heck of it . Here s our review of the most hyped and talked about appearance of the Cannes.

1. In Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

We wouldnt say we ‘disliked’ this look , but the ‘Lungi’ effect just didnt work for us. Whereby the outfit itself was quite unique and intricately embellished, it felt a tad bit ‘over-embellished’ for the Cannes. Should have rather picked it for a Bachan affair . Also, you wear a closed neck, stiff shouldered, full sleeved dress ‘only’ if you are skinny (focus on the ‘only’). She could have done better.

2. In an Angelo Katsapis Maxi Dress

Now we re talking Cannes . As simple as the two toned maxi dress by the Australian designer was, this rather casual look of Aishwarya’s was our personal favorite. Loved the hair & make-up and the L’Oreal nostalgia it brought along.

3. In Elie Saab gown from Fall 2011 couture collection

At the Cosmopolis premiere at Cannes, Aishwarya looked rather confident, comfortable and an almost yummy mummy in the royal blue Elie Saab gown. We say almost because this could have turned out great had she omitted the belt to look less top-heavy (though we believe it was a ‘Do I look like I care’ message for the tabloids) and chosen better accessories.
